talking with other women over the past year I’ve noticed a new phenomenon- some young LDS families aren’t saving because they believe the Lord will provide when the time comes or the Millennium will start before they reach retirement age. This thinking is propelled by pulpit admonishments that we’re living in the last days and we’re the chosen generation, which gives some members a false sense of timing. Besides, who’s to say Jesus will show up and you won’t need money anymore? National numbers clearly show this country is headed toward a retirement crisis and those of us who’ve saved over the course of our lifetimes will be forced to pick up the tab for those who chose to play or pray instead. So, to those of you choosing not to put money away because Jesus is coming, well, here’s some advice, start now because you can’t all be Wal-Mart greeters.

Unfortunately, ill-prepared members of the church will not comprise the largest part of the problem! In general, the population is not saving, but then there are also more impoverished families in these times with jobs leaving the country or closing altoghether, and gas and food prices rising. I know that my husband is socking away cash in a nearly obssessive frenzy, and his plan doesn't include only our nuclear family. His financial plan includes trying to put away enough to take care of a parent, some siblings, and even a couple of non-relative loved ones. He is a good man, and he has felt the Spirit guiding him in this direction, but there are days when I feel a little selfish and think what all that cash could do for our own family right now...
We are preparing financially. It's not smart not to. I have a friend who believes that his children (he has none...) will be his investment. Raise them well and they will support him when he needs it. I think he's off his rocker!
It's even said in the preparedness handbook that we are supposed to have cash on hand as part of the year's storage!
I worked as a walmart greeter a couple times... not fun.
We are also saving up financially and working on our year supply. My husband and I (and our parents) follow Dave Ramsey religiously. I'm amazed how many people are in debt and its only getting worse!
NOT SAVING FOR RETIREMENT BECAUSE OF JESUS?!!! (I think it's because most Mormons are.. well... cheap SOB's)
I agree with the previous poster though, when planning for retirement people should plan for extra family members because you never know what will happen.
DH has a HUGE fear of being like his mother and whining about money and too poor to take care of herself. She has a special needs daughter too-- where was that logic?!
